Divine Creativity

by Jason Hayes on June 26, 2008

We celebrate a God who gives us minds to think and creativity to explore. That’s what makes today’s ideas different from the norm. They don’t exist to promote the ingenuity of man or to applaud the greatness of any one individual. Instead, they are God-breathed and they are God-focused. Their origin is supernatural and their intent is His glory. You know this kind of idea. You have your own set as well.

These are the ideas that keep you awake at night. They are the ideas that drive you out of your present day mindset and into a world of vision and discovery. These are the ideas that send you beyond the grips of comfort and thrust you onto your knees in prayer. These ideas laugh in the face of apathy and combat the presence of mediocrity. They surface in your intimate times with the Lord and yet go noticeably silent in your times of distance. You know these ideas all too well.

At Threads we function around one primary idea. This idea demands our talents, our passions, and our energies. It defines so much of who we are and what we hope to become. The idea is this: to connect young adults to God and the church. Quite simply, we are a group of young adults who are concerned about and yet still believe in our generation. We strive to be a people whose lives are marked by the things that both glorify Him and point this generation toward Christ:

Community is important to us. We believe that life is meant to be experienced together. We not only want, but we also need people. We need people to call when our tire is flat and people to call when we get a promotion. These are the same people who we want to walk through life with. Life is messy. Since these people are already in the day-to-day stuff of our life, we think they should also be a part of the most important aspect of our existence—our spiritual journey.

Then there’s connection. Some people might call this mentoring. We’re looking for a connection with our church and a connection with people who are willing to walk alongside us and give us a little advice here and there. We’d like a connection that gives us the opportunity to have someone pour their lives into us and teach us along the way. And we’re willing to do that for someone else, too.

Next, we believe in responsibility and know that our choices make a difference. Decisions are everywhere. Recycle. Buy fair trade. Sponsor a child. Respect your elders. Tithe. Love your neighbors. Respond to the crisis in Darfur. These are the type of opportunities that define us. We all know these things are important and that’s why we’re committed to doing the right thing as we grow in our understanding of what that means. We know all of these decisions matter, and what matters even more is how we respond.

Finally, we strive to be people of depth. We do this because we care about who we are and what we’re becoming. We’d rather be in over our heads than kicking around in the shallow end. We like to study the hard-to-talk-about topics. We love tough questions and despise pat answers. We like wrestling with Scripture and chewing on things that we can barely wrap our minds around. We believe in processing and find that questions are sometimes even better than answers.

So, let us encourage you. We know what it’s like to be compelled and captured by an idea. Chase your ideas and take them captive. God is honored when you do. And as for our compelling idea, we’re committed to helping churches and leaders reach this generation. We want to come alongside you on your journey and would love for you to come alongside us on ours.
