Big Hairy Audacious Goals

I was going through some old documents on my computer earlier today and stumbled across a document titled, “B-HAGS”. Consequently, I did not coin the term “B-HAGS”, and honestly cannot remember who did, but “B-HAGS” stands for “Big Hairy Audacious Goals”.

The specific document that I found was about four years old and was developed by myself and my program staff while I was working with Fuge Student Camps. We had sat down one night prior to our Bible study leaders and campers arriving for the first week of camp to simply dream about what our goals for that summer were going to be. These goals ranged from having a significant conversation with every student minister, to learning every adult by name and praying for every student in our ministry track groups daily. Some of the B-HAGS seemed extremely unrealistic at the time, while others seemed pretty doable.

All that to say, as I stumbled on this document, I realized that this concept of just dreaming about what something could be, or what you want it to be, is a practice that I just don’t do enough of. Granted, that summer our team met many of those audacious goals and didn’t meet others, but as I even reflected on that summer experience, I was encouraged to see how many of those goals came to fruition, primarily because we identified them as a team and worked toward them.
