Worth Talking About
The months of December and January have taken on a whole new meaning for me these past couple years. About six years ago I was taken on my first duck hunt, and it’s been all downhill since. It seems to dominate my conversations, spare time, and as many mornings as possible. There’s just something about being out in God’s creation before the sun is up and breathing the cold early morning air that I really enjoy. I see sights on the lake in those precious few hours that make my days more enjoyable. But, the thought crossed my mind this week, “Do I enjoy talking about God as much as I do duck hunting?”
That’s the question from this weeks study, just aimed at a different part of my life. As I began thinking about how that applied in other situations, I realized how much time and energy we pour into things that don’t really matter that much. Things like calling every WalMart in six states looking for a particular toy (true story about a coworker), spending hours on the internet searching for the best deal on clutter (also known as Christmas presents the kids don’t touch once January gets here), or food at Christmas parties. I’ve been surrounded by all of these things and so have you probably, in the past few weeks. But honestly, does any of it even matter? Why do we spend so much of our time focusing on things that pale in comparison to our walk with Christ?
What do you have that is really worth talking about? This study reminded me of the hope and purpose that I have. I sometimes forget not everyone shares these. My life, when lived with Christ, shines light into the darkness. THese three things are worth sharing and I needed to be reminded of that this week.
What about you? What things have consumed your thoughts or actions in the past few weeks that really aren’t that big of a deal? How is the hope and purpose you have something you can share? Do you have hope or purpose? Does your life shine? These are all some things to think about this week, instead of being completely caught up in the business of this season. When you pass a manger scene in the next week, think about how that moment in time changed everything and provided you something worth sharing.
