A Vote is in Your Hand

by Jim Johnston on November 03, 2008

One of the recurring themes in the Bible, is found in Exodus 4:2. God asks Moses a question He asks all of us many times during the course of our lives. “What is that in your hand?”

Moses is wielding the least threatening of all weapons that might threaten Pharoah, a a mere shepherd’s staff, the signature of the most downtrodden of workers. God uses that staff to humble the most powerful nation on Earth at that time.

The question comes to bear again when David is about to confront Goliath. Again, God uses a feeble slingshot in the hands of a boy to kill a giant a couple of feet taller than Shaquille O’Neal.

Again, the question comes up in the Book of John, when Andrew is looking for a way to feed thousands of people. He finds a boy with five loaves of bread and two fish in his hand, and the boy is willing to use it to help others. Consequently, Jesus uses it to bring glory to God and bring about an incredible miracle.

The question is here again for all of us Tuesday. “What is that in your hand?” Your privilege of voting for elected officials in our country.

Get up early, stand in line and make sure you use what God has given to you to bring glory to Him. One vote may seem insignificant, much like the shepherd’s staff, the slingshot and the boy’s lunch. Instead, all three of these instruments are recorded as great tools in the hands of God and are milestones in His movement among his people. Go vote and let God take care of the outcome.
