Three Nuns, an Angel, and a Priest

by Heather Manning on March 07, 2007

Doesn’t that sound like the beginning of joke? Actually it’s the beginning of our trip to DC.

One thing you need to know about me: I have a fascination with nuns. So when I got to the airport in Nashville, and saw that there were no more than THREE nuns getting the pat down just two people ahead of me, I knew it was going to be a good day! I reached for my cell phone and, without drawing too much attention to myself, took a picture to send to everyone who knows I have this unexplainable interest.

We moved through the lines and boarded the plane. My seat was in the ‘jump set’ of sorts- seat 1A, the one right by the area where flight attendants fix beverages or have their lunch. Turns out the flight attendant’s name is Angel! I learned this over the intercom like a good little passenger. He learned my name from the flight manifold, and then proceeded to address me by it when asking me if I wanted a beverage. I suppose this could have been really creepy, but it wasn’t. He was nice. He also complimented the title of the book that I was reading - which is odd considering I was reading “Finding God Beyond Harvard: A Quest for Veritas.” Great book, just not something I would expect a stranger to notice from reading the tiny little type at the top of the page. Anyway, moving on…

I get to DC and get on the bus to go get the rental car, and who would sit across from me but a priest - a collar wearing priest!

I actually met someone else who had a very positive impact on the trip. But best I can tell he is not directly spiritual by name, or title. Regardless, the man at the Hertz rental counter might be my new best friend. He upgraded my car to have the “never-lost-direction-wizard.” He is originally from Ethopia, so he is spiritual in my book.

With the nuns picture safely stored in my cellphone, the affirmation of my reading material from Angel, and a wizard in my Ford Taurus, I think God is here!

(Editor’s Note from Valerie: FYI: Heather, Tiffany and I, as well as Steve (video director) and Bobby (audio engineer) are in DC to meet with a couple of Threads authors, interview some people living the life here in the Capitol, and shoot a promotional video for our upcoming study, Connect the Dots. Check back tomorrow to see if we run into Condi!)
