There’s a Bigger Story
Alright, I have a confession to make, I like Nicholas Cage and generally speaking, his movies as well. One of my favorites, that I’ll still watch anytime it’s on TV, is National Treasure. I love the scene when Cage puts on the colored glasses that illuminate different parts of the map as he changes lenses. The invisible becoming visible. Maybe I like the movie so much because I secretly would love to be a treasure hunter. Or maybe I like the idea that there’s a treasure out there and all around me are clues ordinary people never see. But, when you know what to look for, you see things that others don’t.
Sometimes I feel the same way with my walk with Christ. I know there’s a bigger story going on all around me, and I know I have a role in that story, but too often I feel like I am missing it. Like because I can’t see it, I may make the wrong choice or decision or choose the wrong path somehow. If only God would give me a pair of those colored glasses that allowed me to see things that were hidden. Then I would know exactly what to do and where to go.
As I read through the Bible, I see God speaking directly to men, telling them what they are supposed to do. There are also times when men test God and ask Him to prove something so they will know what they’re supposed to do. But today, many of us feel like we don’t have those options available to us. But Romans 12:1-2 lays things out pretty simple, “present your bodies as a living sacrifice.” I think that is where we find the special glasses, hidden inside a brick on the wall of our life. As we present our lives back to our Savior, He reveals the bigger story to us. It becomes less about making the right or wrong decision and more about how closely you’re walking with Him. We can definitely ask for signs to verify decisions in our lives, but if we’re walking closely to Him and offering our all to Him, I don’t think we’ll care too much about it. We’ll begin acting and moving naturally in the ways He wants us to.
Ruth Wellman was one of the godliest women I have ever met. She was like an extra grandmother to me, and I learned so much from her as I was growing up. Of all the things she taught me, I don’t remember her ever wondering about God’s will for her life. She knew Him and walked with Him every day and that took care of the details. That is where I want to find my life. I don’t want to be told what to do next or fear my choices may put me on the wrong path. I want to walk closely to God, and by doing so, maybe I’ll begin seeing the world a bit differently. What about you? Do you see it or are you still wondering how to find it?
