Take Notes From Fido
I’m generally not a dog-lover, but there’s a lot we can learn from “man’s best friend” when it comes to loyalty. One thing I often observe from those who love their dogs is that they seem to find a genuine companionship or trust that’s different from human relationships. Maybe it’s because you can tell your dog those deepest, darkest secrets, knowing he will never tell (unless your dog is the Bush’s baked beans dog, and then the secret’s out). Or maybe it’s because no matter how disloyal you are toward your dog, he will always come when you call, wagging his tail in excitement to see his master.
These days, it’s often hard to trust anyone. Even those we place on pedestals eventually lose balance and fall right in front of us. As I reflect back on my life, it’s actually a bit difficult to pinpoint even a handful of people that I’d consider truly loyal. The point is, people we love will disappoint us somewhere along the way, but God never fails. Throughout Scripture, He paints the picture of what genuine loyalty should look like.
As you prepare for this week’s lesson, keep in mind that loyalty sets your direction. It may not always make sense, but given that God is the only One who is truly loyal, we can’t afford not to show Him the same loyalty. Saul’s loyalty led to his downfall. David’s loyalty led him to the top. Which direction are you allowing loyalty to lead you?
So maybe we should take notes from our canine friends: No matter how often or how much we’re hurt by those we love, let’s choose loyalty over revenge. We’ll only be able to show loyalty to one another, as we’re loyal to our God who never fails us.
How has your understanding of loyalty been challenged as you’ve met and studied together this week? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

I’ve always found that in order to be loyal and also receive loyalty in return, we must understand that true loyalty is an attribute of God. It’s His ‘nature’ to be loyal; whereas it’s our ‘nature’ to be disloyal. I’m always fighting off the urge to be disloyal, but always striving toward living in truth and loyalty, and showing it to others. Especially my chihuahua!

I have an old friend whom I recently had a conversation with a few days ago. We have a very strained relationship and many times this person has stabbed me in the back…but God leads me to keep the friendship open aka be a loyal friend for reasons I can’t always see. The fact that we had a more than decent conversation completely humbled me….I remembered all those times where I wanted to tell this person that the problems in their life were their own fault. But if you take the last candle dimly glowing out of a dark room, the room is now fully pitched into darkness. Therefore, the only way is to keep praying and trusting God to help me be loyal to one of the task he’s put before me.
