Plant a Tree and Watch it Grow

by Heather Wetherington on March 20, 2007

Today I bought a tree in Niger.

I have been on a bit of a journey lately. Since Lent began I have decided to make a few lifestyle changes, like…

  • …giving up my fifth food group: caffeine
  • …working out almost to the point of being obsessive
  • …and being more eco-friendly

When I got my daily email from www.coolpeoplecare.org I was pumped to see that today’s thing to do was buying Acacia trees in Niger.

It was the perfect tie-in for me because Acacia trees have long been thought to be symbolic for Christ. Why you ask? Their resistance to pests, long or deep root systems, thorns, and general use in the temple back in the day, all contribute to this symbolism (I know I’m a nerd). It is the perfect combo since I ultimately want to be a better resident of God’s earth, and this internal shift is a response to God’s movement in me during this holy season.

So it should have a been an easy transaction: go to the site, buy a tree. The problem is I got stuck. I spent longer than my supervisor would deem appropriate (hence my blogging for work at 9:55pm) polling my co-workers for suggested names, all to just chuck their ideas in favor of a budding tatoo idea.

You can see where I landed at Tree Nation. You might even want to buy one of your own and watch it grow!

Here are some name suggestions for your tree from the Threads office:

  • Kumar
  • Aslan
  • Harold
  • Lucy

This year, one of my desires was to get back to being more eco-friendly too! I think I’m recycling at least half of what I used to put into the dumpster! I found a recycling drop off center just minutes from my apartment, and now on Saturdays, it is one of my errands to drop it off. It feels really good. I wish my apartment complex had a recycling drop off, but this is the next best thing.

I’ll check out the links you mentioned too!
