Not just a Random Tuesday
So Tuesday night was an experience that some people say should be written on my life calendar. It was my first Patty Griffin concert and my first Ryman Auditorium concert. I am not a huge live music fan so I haven’t been barreling down the doors of the Ryman to experience that, but I will say last night was not disappointing (heather and tina were both there so they can attest to the evening). I had a great time listening to the honest music of Patty Griffin and if she wasn’t enough she had an amazing percussionist playing with her. His band Terremotoactually opened the concert and it was weird to say the least. It was interesting to see how they made all the sounds (things that sounded like drums were just tambourines) and it was good background music for the conversations we didn’t finish at dinner, but lets just say I’m glad we were a little late.
There were two highlights of the evening and neither of them was seeing Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams despite what everyone else in the crowd seemed to think.
- No Bad News. I’m just going to say that anytime you beat a plastic barrel as a percussion instrument you’re gonna get me every time. But besides that, that song has so much energy and the beat is amazing. They really could have just played that song over and over again and I would have been happy-the rest of the crowd would have been a little upset but you can’t please everyone.
- The female standing bass player. Okay about halfway through the show I noticed this girl was very into the music. At that point I would have called it “moved and soulful” but appropriate. She sang, she played the piano, the cello and the standing bass with a lot of feeling and movement. I really enjoyed watching her as a part of the show. That all ended on the final song of the encore. They played Rain and they took away all of her musical instruments so her only duty was singing and let me just say she went crazy. She was throwing her hair around, moving her body and we were only one bucket of water away from a girls gone wild video. We all left laughing over the spectacle but even that couldn’t bring down an evening of good music and good friends-plus what would I blog about if she hadn’t been there.

That’s right seeing Patty for the first time at the Ryman needs to be added to the calendar of your life. And I whole heartedly agree that the backup singer was one step away from a white snake video. I don’t think they were jamming to “rain” though. I think it was another song… but I can’t for the life of me think what it was. I will now listen to her entire music library attempting to figure it out.

I was not able to go to the Patty Griffin concert last week, but I heard it was great. I found her music through one of my favorite movies a few years ago, Elizabethtown. Long Ride Home was featured on the soundtrack. I have recently picked up a few songs off her new album Children Running Through. Lyrics are incredible. I have been to the Ryman a few times seeing, Nickel Creek, Trans Siberan Orchestra, and Andrew Peterson’s Christmas concert. It’s a great venue, you really cannot go wrong music wise, or even having a bad seat.
