Mary J. Blige at ESL

by Heather Manning on June 20, 2007

It was a relatively quiet night at ESL. I credit the genius craft idea- it goes something like this - glue anything to paper. We are all happily making our yarn pictures when out of the quiet comes Mary J. Blige bellowing “Be Without You Baby.” We have no idea where the music is coming from because up until this point all music came from the small overworked fan in the corner. And one by one the glue covered children looked up and started to react. One four year old girl started singing along. Another little boy shyly raised his hands and said “Wooa Wooa” and then they all started dancing. By this point the music has gotten significantly louder because Ray has now pulled his cellphone out of his pocket. (Now maybe it is really common for fourth grade boys to have cellphones that sing Mary J. Blige but this all very new to me.) He lets it play for all to enjoy and then casually walks to the door like A. he can leave the room B. he has been expecting this call. So if anyone has musical recommendation of the R&B variety that are kid friend- let me know because we have so found next weeks activity. Can you say “Dance Party ThriftSmart.”

How about introducing them to old school (MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice?) Definitely kid friendly, and danceable.

And I personally would love to see you and the gang get down to this one: The Humpty Dance - Digital Underground (I don’t know about kid friendly)

Yes and if we bring “Pray” by MC Hammer we could even teach the kiddos a spiritual discipline :)

YES!!! Way to take me back to middle school. I think we might could put together a little dance number to some Boyz II Men. If fwe want to go way back in the way back machine we could bust out some Bobby Brown and then have a lesson on drugs prevention.

Hey,

How ‘bout trying some great Christian alternatives like

Anointed (sounds like Boyz II Men, En Vogue ) George Huff (sound like Luther Vandross, Ruben Studdard, Brian McKnight, Babyface, and Anthony Hamilton) Kelli Williams (sound like Brandy, TLC, Destiny’s Child) Kirk Franklin (sounds like Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Dru hill, Boyz II Men) Lisa McClendon (sounds like Lauryn Hill, Macy Gray, Mary J. Blige) Mary Mary (sounds like Destiny’s Child, Alicia Keys, Aaliyah, TLC) Michael Speaks (sounds like Dru hill, Boyz II Men) Out of Eden (sounds like Destiny’s Child, TLC, En Vogue, Alicia Keys) Shawn Matthew (sounds like Music Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, and Mario Winans ) Trin-i-tee 5:7 (sounds like Brandy, TLC, Destiny’s Child)

Praising God is as kid-friendly as you’re going to get!
