Is it as easy as it seems on TV?

What does it take to follow Christ? Matthew 7:13-15 paints a different picture of Christianity than we typically see from the TV and many churches these days. Following Christ is often seen as a way to the easy life, comfort, and the Promised Land. But these verses talk about the narrow gate and few finding it. Wide is the path that leads to destruction though. Watch this video and think if it is something you’d sign up for. To join the Royal Marines, I’d definitely say you have to enter through a narrow gate.

After watching that video, you get a good idea of what is expected if you want to become a Royal Marine. There are no surprises and questions as to what it will take or cast. But how clear are we with what becoming a Christian looks like, calls for, requires? So this week, I want to hear from you. What does it take to follow Christ? If you had someone ask you that question, how would you answer? If you made a promo video like this one, what would it look like? Take these questions seriously and look to the Bible to see what it has to say and then look at your life and see if you’re really walking the narrow path or getting caught up in the flow leading to destruction.

What a great example of expectations…we act like what Jesus expects is so hard. Is it really? Tell others about him. Maybe we don’t make it hard enough; salvation is free. Is that the only message we get? James was killed; Paul was killed; John the Baptist was beheaded; Polycarp was burned at the stake; Christians were used as torches in Nero’s Rome. Why do we think we get to sit in padded pews? Salvation’s cost was paid…discipleship isn’t free. We are to pass it on even if we are embarrassed, passed over, derided, or killed. I’ve never been physically hurt for Jesus. Am I being blessed or lazy?

I absolutely agree. The cost of discipleship is high, and we must praise God when we suffer in the name of Christ, just as Peter and John did after they were beaten. We are blessed to live in a land where Christianity is not trying to be destroyed, but we have taken that for granted. I’ve been to China and seen the way the believers there live out their walk with Christ, and we have a lot of work to do. They are persecuted, we are not, but spiritually, they are much better off than we.
