I Wish I Was a Shepherd!
Have you seen the movie, The Nativity? If not, I highly recommend it. My church watched it together last Saturday night as part of our Christmas celebration. It was the first time I had seen it and I will probably be buying it pretty soon. It was excellent “seeing” the Christmas story. I am a visual person and I love seeing the Bible come to life. Granted you have to allow for some inconsistencies and directors add ins, but all in all the movie was excellent. Seeing the story brought to life, not on a church stage or in a church parking lot, was great. We got to peek into the life and possible thoughts of Mary, the struggles Joseph faced, the difficulty of life during that period, the insanity of the political system (Herod), the faith it took for wise men to travel across the world for this special event, and we also get to see the arrival of OUR King, and the love of OUR God.
My favorite scene in the movie involved a shepherd. He is the kind of guy I pass everyday here in Nashville. He is easy to miss because he is of little value to our society. The shepherds of that day tended to the animals and were not a real part of society, out of sight out of mind as they say. Mary and Joseph were traveling and it would have been easy to pass right by, but he, the shepherd, shared his fire with the young couple. The one in the position to be pitied, had compassion. He shared what he had with no expectation of anything in return. Later on, that same shepherd is the one the angel appears to and he gets to see the baby Jesus. A man removed from society, far down on the totem pole, was the type of person Christ invited to meet the Savior. God born as a baby, and His birth was celebrated by the rejects and outcasts. His baby room was decorated with hay, manure, and smelly animals. His crib was a trough better suited for slop. To say He entered on humble terms seems insignificant. That fact that the insignificant were why He came, is very significant.
I like that the shepherd had a front row seat. I like that he got that gift. He was a witness to a once in history event. The most miraculous of all the miracles. The event that divided history, and he had an invitation. It kinda gives me hope today. I can come as I am, dirty, smelly, covered in sin, and know that Christ came for people like me. And He offers us a life different than anything we could have ever expected. After meeting Christ, the babe, the shepherds’ lives changed. They immediately left and began telling people about what they had seen. The lowest people in society had a gift to share, and share it they did. We find ourselves in that same boat today. We have a gift to share and to not share it is wrong. To not live life differently is wrong. To see people hurting and not help is wrong. To see people living life without Christ and not love them and tell them about Christ is wrong. We have an opportunity to BE the gift of Christmas. He is for ALL mankind, He loved ALL mankind, and He died for ALL mankind. Let’s allow Him to teach us a new way to be human!

I love this movie too!
Hi Chad, Hope your family had a great Christmas and hope your New Year plans go well. Havent seen or heard from you in a while, but I have been thinking of you the last couple of weeks. Tammy and I have landed at The Bridge Fellowship and we love it. We have really seen God at work there and are getting pluged in. I am about to start my second community young adult / college / career ministry soon. This one will take place in wilson county. Small groups will start in Jan. I have a question for you. I really want to find a great study to start off these kids with. I have used connect the dots and chase the lion before. I thought they were so awesome. Im looking for something that dynamic, encourages building community and engaging in conversation and dialog. I would really love something that centers around “what and who do you place your identity in”. I know that is alot, but that is where God has placed my heart in for now. I am open to anything else that may be really good. I have searched the Threads materials and Serendipity materials and have not found what I am looking for. So if you know anything outside of Threads that woudl be ok as well.

Mark, i am in a Sunday School class that uses the lifematters material and i love it. We have been a part of the class for 4 months and the way the book divides into different sessions i think it would be really easy to start now. (personally, last week and this weeks lessons everyone needs to read.) I am 33yrs old and the book is arranged in a way that keeps my interest instead of “professor type language” other books use. it would be great for a young adult class. i say go for it!

Shannon- Thanks for the endorsement. I love hearing from people using the study and know that it is working for them.
If you guys ever talk to someone in another church that wants to try LifeMatters, just have them email me. I have extra books I send out to people wanting to see it. If you like the study, tell someone about it. If you don’t like the study, why are you reading the blog? Just kidding, if you don’t like the study email me and let me know what is not working for you. My goal is to provide a study that helps speak biblical truth into the lives of young adults. Together I think we can do it.

Mark Edwards- Good hearing from you and I am glad you guys have found a new church home. I know how important feeling connected is and I hope your small group ministry does well. The first study that comes to mind is Sent. This study is great about defining what the church should be about. Not necessarily what the church is about today, but what it should be about. I think this would be a wonderful study to begin a new group with. Doing church through small groups is different and the challenges and benefits are many. Helping a new group redefine church and what God may be calling this new group to be about would be a great place to start.
On another note, the book Tribes, by Seth Godin would be good to lead a group through as well. Please note that this is not a Bible study, but a book about being radical people in a world of status quo. You will not grow spiritually by reading this book, but you will be challenged. So do this one on the side, one of the few books I have read recently that I feel strongly about.
