I Don’t Like American Idol

by Michael Kelley on May 23, 2007

I don’t like American idol. There, I said it. I feel a little like I’m at an AA meeting: “Hello, my name is Michael, and I don’t like American Idol.” I wish there was a good reason behind it, something spiritual maybe, but there’s not. I just don’t like it that much.

But I think it goes a little beyond American Idol. I’ve been down the reality TV road and have come back. I have had brief stints of infatuation with Survivor, Top Chef, Design Star, the Apprentice, The Amazing Race, and—gulp—America’s Next Top Model. For some reason I’m just not into it any more. Any of it. And it seems like I’m the only one.

After all, last night more people took time to vote on whether what’s her name beats what’s his name, or if what’s his name is better than what’s the other guy’s name who had the mohawk in the middle of the season? Serendipidy? Saranghetti? Not sure any more.

Maybe the reason I’m writing this is not to try and bring down the system of AI (artificial intelligence?). I don’t want to do that; I support those who like - even love - American Idol. Maybe I just want to feel like I’m not alone. But for now, criticizing others is my personal form of self-protection, so go America. Run, lemmings! Follow, you sheep! Your destiny with what’s his name or what’s her name awaits!

You are not the only one. I don’t like “AI” or “Dancing with the Stars” or any reality show for that matter. I have to live in reality every day and what I watch on TV, I’d like to be fiction. The only reality TV I watch is on Discovery Channel or Discovery Health…okay, I admit I watch the occasional “Run’s House” when nothing else is on, but at least he’s a preacher, right?

I just want to step in real quick and explain why I in fact do like reality television (not that I’m not going to get on board with AI or anything crazy like that). You know what I can’t do in my real world-race around the world, or compete in vigorous mental or physical competitions. I get to come home and live vicariously through the people on those shows. So I enjoy the fiction of believing I could win a million dollars or an apprenticeship, thus I will be one sad consumer when the reality show fad ends.

Ha! I love it! I’m so not into all that either. I have enough in my life and those that I actually KNOW to keep me busy. What if we stopped being infatuated with TV stars/people and actually put that time, effort, emotional attachment into those who need it that are actually a part of our lives already?!?! The world would be a better place, I tell you.
