Give Thanks… for Those Unexpected Blessings
We all know the set-up: In the latest version of a wholesome and heartfelt made-for-TV movie, a family is gathered around a large table overflowing with mouth-watering food and well-mannered children. At the head of the table, the father carves the turkey, prays before the meal and closes by asking everyone to share what they’re most thankful for this Thanksgiving. Their answers? All perfect as well.
While most of our family gatherings aren’t quite this picture-perfect, at some point this month you’ll probably be asked to share what you’re thankful for. I always hate that question because I want to think of something original to say. As I think about all the ways God has blessed me this year, it occurred to me that most often I’m thankful for the things that make me happy or make my life easier: financial stability, caring family and friends, no car payment, and so on. But what things should I really be thankful for in my life? What things should I focus my gratitude toward?
If I’m really honest with myself, I realize that the things I’m most thankful for are sometimes painful, often require a great deal of effort, and are almost never easy.
So, here’s my list of not-so-predictable reasons to give thanks…
I am thankful for…
- Parents who taught me to think for myself and model unconditional love,
- Friends who challenge me in my relationship with Christ and treat me like family,
- A church that teaches the Bible and holds me accountable to apply what I learn in community with other people,
- A job that requires creativity and gives me the opportunity to learn about myself and God every day,
- The tough times, the times of waiting, and the things that I don’t understand that remind me that God has a plan and that things are in His control and not mine,
- A God who loves me unconditionally but also disciplines me to grow closer to Him, and
- A Savior who answers every prayer (whether it’s the answer I want to hear or not).
Feel free to add your own; how have God’s blessings impacted your life?
