Get Uncomfortable gets nice notice

by Jim Johnston on February 11, 2008

A little less than two years ago, Todd Phillips and I met out in Phoenix to talk about Threads and an idea God had embedded deep into his heart and mind. For about an hour, he poured out his passion for the intersection of social justice and evangelism. By the time our conversation had ended, I was convinced God had blessed us with a special person and a special message to get out to the world.

Todd’s Bible study Get Uncomfortable was that message and last week we received word this study had been given a very special honor.

Get Uncomfortable has been recognized as a finalist for Outreach Magazine’s Small Group Resource of the Year, which is awarded each year by the readers of the magazine. Books, DVDs and curriculum are selected for this honor that represent and encourage innovation and passion in the areas of evangelism, justice and church growth. The winner will be announced in April, and Outreach’s May-June issue will feature a special story on the winning resource.

From the very beginning of our team’s partnership with Todd and the development of this study, we all felt this could be a very special study, one that God could use to re-order life priorities and give people who went through the study a much different Christian worldview. It’s not about winning awards. It’s about changing hearts and minds. But it would still be fine with us if Get Uncomfortable turned out to be the big winner.

I found a review of this study online that sums up what Get Uncomfortable is all about:

What I love about this curriculum is that it doesn’t allow the student to simply study it and walk away unchanged. Every lesson, song, interview and video has been written to compel the student to action. It is designed to turn a passive audience into a group of ardent activists for the cause of Christ.

We’re thankful to Todd and to contributor Mike Hurt, his friend, partner in crime and co-minister at McLean (Va.) Bible Church, for all they have done to help us create the Get Uncomfortable study.

God is good.
