December 19—The Nativity Story and Your Story

by Katie Krebs on December 17, 2010 to the LifeMatters blog

Well, folks, it’s official—Christmas Eve is exactly one week away. Between Christmas parties, shopping, and baking cookies with my 19-month-old (and if you have a toddler, you know “baking” means getting more sprinkles on the carpet than on the cookies), the month of December has flown by. As busy as December gets, it’s easy to lose sight of the real reason for celebrating Christmas.

Of course, as Christians, it’s important to remember that many don’t know Christ or understand Christmas’s true importance. If you have unbelieving friends or neighbors, consider inviting them over for a movie night to watch The Nativity Story, which was mentioned in this month’s learner guide. That movie is a great way to open a dialogue about the gospel.

And if you’re like me and the thought of sharing your faith terrifies you, you can benefit from the wisdom in this audio clip from Threads’ author Michael Kelley.

I went to the last Christmas party last night. My wife is cooking breakfast, it smells goood! I am realizing the hussle and bussle of Christmas is becoming a distraction. I am a Southern Baptist Christian and Born again just 6 years ago. I study the Bible because I love this life I have which is second to none. This is a reminder to myself…it’s about the birth of my new Lifegiver, Jesus.

Remembering the Christmas story around this time of the year is also a time to think of our own story. Christ’s story was dedicated to leading people to our relational God. Is are story similar to Christ’s? We have to reflect and ask ourselves- Are we really living a life that leads others to God?! Christ set the ultimate story for all of u to follow. Let us take this Christmas time to truly understand Jesus’ story as well as our own!! Merry Christmas!

A growing number of churches and small groups are implementing some form of a “Dollar Club.” Our group began several months ago setting a coffee can out for anyone interested to contribute a dollar or whatever loose change they have with them each Sunday. With a group of about 20 attending, we’ve been able to collect about $100 each month.

At the end of the month the group decides how to use the money for a mission/ministry project. We bought food for a local school backpack program one month. Last month we paid for several Thanksgiving baskets. Yesterday we had fun flipping through a catalog of a relief organization, and deciding to purchase a combination of guinea pigs, ducks, water purification tablets, a fruit tree and Bibles.

It’s a great way for our young adults to feel like they’re a part of changing the world.

My 6 year old daughter, asked if she could take our nativity scene to school for show and tell. After checking with her teacher, I helped her get all of the pieces there and set up, and then was there for moral support and to help with the story when she got nervous. She was so excited to be able to share about Jesus with ALL of her class at one time!! She already has 2 of her classmates coming to our church, that were not attending anywhere before, and they love it!!! Let’s just say I am a bit of a proud parent right now!
