Community, more than just a new buzz word?
One of the buzz words finding its way through many Christian circles right now is “community.” Buzz words come and go like fads, disappearing as soon as other ones catch on. But community, in relation to our faith, is nothing new. It’s been around for quite a while. In fact, community is supposed to be a huge part of our faith journey. We all know we’re supposed to walk with other believers and help each other through life’s stuff. Hanging out with other believers is easy. The church is really good at this as well. You can pretty much count on the three Fs of a good church: food, fun, and fellowship. At my church, we play Cornhole. It’s a great game that requires Lebron James like athleticism mixed with Tiger Woods like concentration and all around catlike skill and reflexes. OK, that was an exaggeration. All you have to do is stand in one spot and throw beanbags at a board with a hole in it. Watch this little video to capture to essence of Cornhole.
So, we’ve got fellowship with other believers down to a science. And that’s a good thing. But we’re missing the fellowship with our Creator. We understand the importance of connecting with other believers, but hanging out with God can be difficult to grasp and therefore difficult to live out. You see, we can keep people at arm’s length and still say we have community, but we can’t have fellowship with Christ that way. He knows our hearts, and honestly, being in fellowship with Him requires a lot. Perpetual sin can’t be a part of our lives; it has to be constantly dealt with. We can’t walk in the darkness and say we have fellowship with Him. You see, fellowship with other believers can technically, though incorrectly, be squeezed into the few hours a week we see people. We can act right for those few hours and hide behind our churchy masks. But fellowship with Christ calls for genuine, around-the-clock interaction.
Are you settling for potluck fellowship with God, enjoying a few minutes here and there with Him, or are you living interacting with Him all day, every day? These passages in 1 John lay out what real fellowship looks like. And guess what—it’s black and white. There’s no gray area. Spend some time this weekend hanging out with God, reading His Word and talking to Him about what’s going on in your life. Having genuine fellowship with Him allows us to have real community with others, just like God designed it. Are you connected?

Oh…my…ummmm…corn…holing??? Well…uhhh…no…I don’t think that’s quite all there is to fellowship. :-) But my, aren’t you brave, to share this side of your personal life with us just as you are launching your new website! lol

You’d be surprised about the amount of fellowship that can take place during a game of cornhole. It also serves as a great fund raising tool. On June 20, we will be having the first Cornhole Tourney at the Journey, to raise money for a few missional fellows we know.

I was just funnin’ with you. I’m sure it’s a blast!
I like the new website. REALLY like the Intro to LifeMatters video. Very well done.
The June Leader’s Intro helped me out in understanding the unit title. I’m not a gamer so I just wasn’t quite getting it. I related “tagged” to tagging photos on facebook. I guess it works that way, also.
I still would like to see videos addressed toward Learners to intro the unit….Something we could show during announcement time before worship service or send by email or facebook, etc.
So…cornholes, video games, and a pencil behind your ear?? You really are being transparent with us now aren’t you?! lol
Keep up the good work, Chad!

Chad,
I just looked at the new June intro video for Leaders again. I’m going to try using it to intro the unit in my class by stopping it at 2:20 right before the “Leader Tips”. It’s easy to spot the cut off because the vid goes from a close up to a wide shot for “Leader Tips”.
Leaders:
Two new songs you might want to use to tie into the “streelight” analogy used in the Learner Guides devo are both available for FREE at Amazon when you download entire albums for FREE.
“Streetlight” by Danyew is on Now Hear This: Discover New Music - Rock
“Life Light Up” by Christy Nockels in on Now Hear This: Discover New Music - Pop
Enjoy!

Sandy- You can use that video any way you want to:) This is our first attempt at bringing these type of things to you. I want to do some other videos as soon as we can. For now, its pretty cheap for me to use people like myself and do some intro type stuff.
What would you guys think about videos like this that would help intro individual lessons and would certainly not be all me talking but a similar style?
How about the LifeMatters/ state of SS video? Some great guys at Haven Productions put that together for us. I think it turned out great. Lesson to be learned, stop shooting nuggets of info at your class and begin leading them through the minefield of life.

Chad,
Just one more comment on the intro videos. It would be helpful if they were downloadable. Unfortunately, not everyone has wireless internet capabilities.

Sandy,
You can download the intro videos, but you need to do it directly from the Vimeo page.
http://vimeo.com/5006302
I believe you need to sign up for Vimeo (it is free). Once you do, when you go to the bottom right of the page, you’ll see the option to download the file. It is a quicktime file. I downloaded the June intro video to show to my class today since I didn’t have wireless internet either.
Chad,
Having videos for the individual lessons would be really helpful. Something like the LifeMatters/State of SS video would be awesome! I’m finding media, especially, videos are a powerful way to communicate with this generation. Please keep those videos coming! :D

Matt,
Thanks for the Vimeo download info. I’ll try that next time. Since we live next door to the church so I was able to pick up a weak wireless signal from our home wireless network. The video took a while to load, but the class really enjoyed the vid and it did seem to help them get a better understanding of the unit theme and where we are headed this month.
FYI, I also made a YouTube playlist on my laptop of music videos and had that playing as the class arrived.
