Bored? Post Your # on YouTube

by Jim Johnston on April 23, 2007

There is a wild phenomenon going on at YouTube at the moment.

People are posting their mobile numbers on the site and asking people to call them at any time of the day or night.

Ryan Fitzgerald was the originator, taking 3,420 calls in 36 hours before finally giving into sleep. Not surprisingly, he burned all of his free nights and weekend minutes. A CNN reporter called at 4 a.m. Monday and busted him. He didn’t answer. Exhaustion had finally set in and he drifted off to sleep.

He received calls from Mexico, the Island of Cyprus, practically everywhere on earth.

Ryan’s motivation was simple: He said he wanted to be there for the lonely people, the people who were up at 4 a.m. with a problem that they need to talk to someone about. That’s a pretty cool reason to post your phone number for the world to see.

Predictably, the trend has spawned copycats. Luke Johnson is the newest YouTube mobile phone guy:

My Threads friend Valerie Hancock tells me Christian artist Brandon Heath did the same thing by posting his mobile number on his CD jacket. We have not heard of his results just yet, but we are betting he is going to need to get a new number
