Better than Ezra State of Mind

by Heather Manning on April 22, 2009 to the Collegiate blog

To get in the proper frame of mind for this blog I set Pandora to my new Better than Ezra station. (So imagine “This Time of Year” playing as you read this.) I started and finished college in love with southern rock so it feels appropriate to summon my younger self with their music.

My name is Heather and among my distinctions is the title of graphic designer for Collegiate magazine. On a daily basis that could mean anything from convincing my coworkers to wear goggles and silly hats for a photo shoot or going to BeachReach to meet my new best friends from Hannibal-LaGrange College. (Long live Chuck Norris!) I love my job!

A few things that might be interesting to know about me … I managed to attend three colleges during my educational tour, the most interesting being The University of London. Also, during college I stumbled into three jobs that required me to dress as a mascot and try to sell stuff. (It’s hard to live down a chicken costume in the Christmas parade.) What else … I was in Tribe (our version of sororities) but only so I could design cool T-shirts. I hold an art degree from Mississippi College. Go Choctaws! And I’ve managed to make a living from it (that’s something that my parents were a little shaky on for awhile).

And I guess one of the most important things you should know about me is that I love college students. They have the most amazing energy and potential. College students don’t need money, food, or sleep. They can survive almost entirely on energy and dreams. And getting to watch people learn who they are and what they believe is a gift. That’s why I love working on Collegiate. Well, that, and the near-constant sharing of the hilarity that only happens in college.

I do collegiate ministry in Jacksonville, FL. I normally don’t blog anything but while I was looking at the website, I couldn’t help but compliment you on your choice of music. I’m glad there are some fans of real music still out there from a fellow Ezralite.

Thanks for the affirmation Lance. It’s hard to beat the “Deluxe” album.

So are you on campus or at a church?

I had no idea you had such a diverse college experience! I guess that’s part of what makes you the special soul that you are. You rock Heather!

Wow, it sounds like you’ve had quite a tour. And 3 different colleges, impressive. I’d to invite you to share your point of view by writing some college reviews on my site StuVu.com (as in student view) and share some insight to the schools you went to. I’m sure your point of view could really help some people. Thanks
