In my heart I feel a longing to trust and follow the bible. But I don’t understand how we are to accept some of the things we read in the bible as to be of that as a loving and merciful God. Cain and Able ’ they both tried to please God yet He chose one over the other. Let the ones who loved both boys suffer as one brother kills the other. This is loving and merciful ? Jesus curses a fig tree that had no fruit when he wanted there to be some ? Killing the tree for no one else can ever benifit from the tree ever again in life . And worse yet, killing the first born son of so many ? Loving and merciful ? I don’t understand? What I do know is I believe in Jesus ! God my father, and the Holy Spirit ! But no matter how hard you try to do the right thing , if you piss him off, He isn’t so loving and kind. Am I wrong? May God Bless You ! Love Rocky

Rocky, Thank you for post and for being so frank with your question. God is loving — beyond our ability to discern it — and but He is also holy and just — beyond our ability to discern it.

God didn’t choose Abel over Cain. He chose to honor the person’s heart whose sacrifice truly understand what God desired. Cain made the choice to kill. God gave him free will —as He did all of us — and Cain made the wrong choice.

God did wipe out civilizations in the Old Testament, but they were civilizations who did unspeakable things like child sacrifice and many other horrors. He could not look on that kind of sin and not take action.

I think it’s important to understand that God never sends anyone to Hell. It is His desire that no one feels His wrath. That’s why He made a provision for us by sending Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins. He made a way for us.

But we send ourselves to Hell if you we choose something else instead of God’s provision for us in Jesus.

I think it’s also VITALLY important to understand that trying hard to do the right thing doesn’t get us into heaven or get us closer to God. The Bible tells us that’s as good as “filthy rags.” The only thing that will allow God to look on us without sin is the sacrifice of Jesus and the acceptance of that gift. Then, we allow the Holy Spirit to take control of our lives and our filthy rags and our effort are transformed into something He can use here on Earth.

Rocky, if you would like to talk further, I would glad to speak you on the phone and answer any questions you have. Just let me know.

Your brother in Christ, Jim Johnston
